Camp hit by 60 knots Gale Force

In the early hours of Monday 01 May 2006, the Western Cape's first Eco Centre for School learners was devastated by Gale Force South Easter winds. The 120 km strong winds destroyed ten luxury Canvas Lodge Tents, a 50 sqm Canvas Environ Tent, a Kitchen Tent and a serving Gazebo. The quote to repair the camp, is around R90 000.00

Camp Africa has hosted thousands of disadvantaged school learners in their innovative three day, two nights camp and was recently awarded the prestigious internationally recognised Green Eco Schools Flag by the Wildlife and Environment Society (WESSA).

Camp Director, Terry Corr of My African Dream Children's Trust said 'we are devastated by the damage that the Wind caused. The Camp has stood up to many storms but this storm wind was like a 'mini tornado'. When we checked the wind speed at 4.00 am on Monday morning, it was registered at 60 Knots or about 120 km/h.

Municipal Signs on thick metal poles were being broken like match sticks and the Tents could take no more. Fortunately, there were no learners at the camp at the time.

Of the future?

We are picking up the pieces and assessing the damage, which is considerable. All the camping equipment was donated over a period of three years by the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) and cannot be easily replaced. However, we are a registered Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) and have been approved for purposes of Section 18 a of the Income Tax Act, which means that corporates or company donors could donate funds to replace the damaged equipment and this would be Tax deductible.

We really believe that we have changed many children's lives through our Innovative camps, which include presentations on HIV Aids and Substance and Alcohol Abuse.’

My African Dream Children's Trust appeals to any prospective donors to assist in getting Camp Africa back up and running.
