The Makalani palm
This palm tree grows in semi-desert areas. The fruit has a sweet, juicy pulp that provides for both – people and animals. Besides providing invaluable shade, the palm fronds are skillfully woven into distinctive basket ware. Once made primarily for domestic use, baskets of all shapes and sizes are now sold at roadside stalls to appreciative tourists. Makalani palms yield vegetable ivory or ivory nuts.. An ideal source for the carving of curios, these exceedingly hard and dense kernels provide an environmentally friendly substitute for elephant ivory.
